U.S. Consul General Donna Blair and U.S. Counselor for Public Affairs Atim Eneida George visited the Southwest Community Resource Center in Abeokuta, Nigeria on July 16 to hold a program entitled The Power of Citizen Driven Development. Ms. George addressed a group of 45 stakeholders drawn from the public service, civil society, academia and the private sector. The seminar is part of the Mission’s commitment to support democratic governance in Nigeria. Ms. George reminded the audience of the words of American anthropologist Margaret Mead “Never forget that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world, indeed it is the only thing that ever has.”
Consul General Blair shared her insights on the importance of civic education. She explained the impact of studying not only U.S. history but the history of her home state and city. Participants reported that they can make a positive difference in their respective communities. Commissioner for Tourism in Ogun State, Deaconess Doyin Ogunbiyi and Mrs Stella Hunter, an IT Consultant to Ogun State were in attendance.
