Ambassador Robin Sanders Commissions Nigeria’s First AGOA Shipment

The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Robin R. Sanders commissioned a shipment of garments and food products bound for the United States under the African Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA). These are the first Nigerian products exported to the United States under AGOA and represent a new era of trade between the two countries.

During her speech at The F&D Garment Manufacturing Company the Ambassador praised the Nigerian business community and noted her satisfaction in seeing Nigerian businesses take increased advantage of AGOA trade opportunities—especially in non-oil industries. (more)

U.S. Embassy Gives Nigeria’s YES Participants Tips on Studying in the U.S.

Twenty-nine high school students and one teacher, selected for this year’s Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program from Nigeria, received a three-hour pre-departure briefing organized by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy, Abuja. The U. S. Counselor for Public Affairs Ms. Atim Eneida George, opened the briefing with a motivating parable, which taught the students to never forget that “their backyard holds acres of diamonds” and opportunity. WORLDWIDE CAUTION

This Worldwide Caution updates information on the continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence against Americans and interests throughout the world.  In some countries, the rise in oil and food prices has caused political and economic instability and social unrest. American citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness.  This supersedes the Worldwide Caution dated January 17, 2008. U.S. Doctoral Student Shares Research Findings on HIV/AIDS and Marriage at a Seminar in Abuja

Kathryn Rhine 
The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Mission sponsored a seminar led by Brown University doctoral candidate Kathryn Rhine. Hosted by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Ms. Rhine, a U.S. Fulbright-Hayes recipient, captured the interest of a broad array of participants interested in her studies of HIV/AIDS in northern Nigeria.  Ms. Rhine talked about relationships and marriage and the spread of HIV/AIDS in the two northern cities of Kano and Jos. The Power of Citizen Driven Development Drives Home in Abeokuta

U.S. Consul General Donna Blair and U.S. Counselor for Public Affairs Atim Eneida George visited the Southwest Community Resource Center in Abeokuta, Nigeria on July 16 to hold a program entitled The Power of Citizen Driven Development.  Ms. George addressed a group of 45 stakeholders drawn from the public service, civil society, academia and the private sector.  (more)

United States Government Assists Nigeria's Electricity Regulatory Commission

Ambassador Sanders and NERC Chairman display signed copies of the MOU. 
On Tuesday, July 15, 2008, U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Robin R. Sanders witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the United States' National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The agreement will organize and implement a regulatory partnership between NARUC and NERC. The United States Government is supporting the collaboration with funding through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). (more)
